What is Biomimetic Dentistry?

The direct definition is “to mimic what is life-like, ” and that is exactly what we aim to achieve. This form of conservative care aims to restore a damaged tooth to its original function without removing anything healthy.

What are the Benefits?

Traditionally, when a crown or filling is placed, the healthy tooth structure is removed to make way for it. However, this can lead to complications such as shrinkage, gaps, or even root canals. With biomimetic dentistry, only the damage and decay is removed, which preserves the tooth’s vitality. This has proven to reduce complications like root canals by 90% and minimizes stress on the tooth.

How is it Performed?

Biomimetic dentistry restores your tooth’s function and looks by using advanced adhesive methods that increase the bond strength of restorations. These materials are placed by your biomimetic dentist, Dr. DeWood, and create long-lasting results with minimal complications.

You can regain your tooth’s strength, function, and natural look with our innovative treatment.

Bridges are used to replace a missing tooth in both a cosmetic and functional fashion. A bridge structure is one or more artificial teeth anchored in place by teeth on each side of the bridge. Using a bridge to fill the gap from missing teeth helps restore proper bite and prevent teeth from shifting to fill the gap (which may lead to additional bite and jaw joint issues).

Bridges can be constructed from gold, porcelain, and metal, or all ceramic. Ceramic bridge color is made to match your natural tooth color. Material choice will depend on structural requirements, wear, and aesthetics.

Bridges are used to:

  • Replace missing teeth
  • Prevent teeth from shifting
  • Correct bite issues due to missing teeth
  • Help prevent jaw joint problems from an altered bite
  • Improve appearance (cosmetic reasons)
Dental Crowns

Crowns are used to restore teeth severely damaged by cracks, fractures, or decay. After the tooth surface is cleaned and prepared, the crown is placed to cover the remainder of the tooth. The crown strengthens the tooth structure and helps prevent future decay.

Crowns also improve the tooth’s look, shape, and alignment. Today’s crowns are stronger and more beautiful than ever!

Crowns are used to:

  • Restore a fractured tooth
  • Restore a tooth severely damaged by decay
  • Protect a tooth from fracture
  • Cover a discolored or unattractive tooth
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Anchor a bridge
  • Restore a tooth with a root canal

Dental fillings are used to restore areas affected by tooth decay known as cavities or chips on your front teeth. When placing fillings, Dr. DeWood will remove all the decay and prepare the tooth for a composite (tooth-colored) filling. She will only remove the damaged area and nothing healthy.

Next, the durable and long-lasting filling is bonded to your tooth’s surface using advanced adhesive techniques. The result is a careful restoration that will protect your tooth and restore its natural function.

Dental Implants

Implants may be the best option to replace missing teeth or to improve retention for a full or partial denture. An implant is a titanium post that is attached directly to the jawbone, much like a natural tooth’s root. After the bone and surrounding tissue have healed, an artificial tooth can be attached to the implant.

Implants provide additional benefits compared to bridgework as they do not depend on neighboring teeth for structural support and cannot get cavities. Implants are the closest dental structure in durability to natural teeth and may have greater cosmetic appeal.

Implants are used to:

  • Replace missing teeth
  • Prevent teeth from shifting
  • Correct bite issues due to missing teeth
  • Help prevent jaw joint problems from an altered bite
  • Improve appearance (cosmetic reasons)
  • Help retain a denture or partial

Bonding can be used in certain situations where a tooth has been damaged or become stained. It is a procedure in which Dr. DeWood prepares the tooth surface so that the bonding material will adhere. Once that’s applied, your dentist will shape it, so it has a natural appearance. Then the material is allowed to harden, usually with the help of a light. Finally, the composite is polished and buffed so the surface is smooth.

Dental bonding can take less time to accomplish and may not even require anesthesia, causing little to no pain.

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are very thin pieces of durable, tooth-shaped porcelain that are custom-made (for shape and color) by a professional dental laboratory. They are bonded onto the front of teeth to create a beautiful and attractive smile.

There are many reasons why your smile may benefit from porcelain veneers including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Severely discolored or stained teeth
  • Unwanted or uneven spaces
  • Worn or chipped teeth

The process begins with your teeth being lightly buffed and shaped to allow for the thickness of the veneer. A mold or impression of each tooth is taken, and you and Dr. DeWood will choose a shade (color). The teeth will be cleaned with special liquids to achieve a durable bond. Bonding cement is placed between each tooth and veneer, and a special light is used to harden and set the bond, leaving you with a beautiful smile.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, noninvasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel, and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile. Many people seek whitening due to yellow and stained teeth from everyday activities.

There are two options for whitening:

At-home: During your first visit, Dr. DeWood will take impressions (molds) of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear, plastic trays. Once the trays are made, you will come in to make sure they fit comfortably. The trays are worn with the whitening solution either twice a day or overnight for a couple of weeks, depending on the degree of staining and desired level of whitening.

Zoom!: This type of whitening is performed in-house by your Bellevue dentist. It requires a special gel to be spread over your teeth and then the high-tech Zoom! light will brighten your smile by up to eight shades.
